Matters

I literally wake up every day with no idea who’s going to call or what’s going to happen, and I have to come up with creative solutions. It’s never boring.

Natasha J. Baker, a partner in the firm’s San Francisco office, says she enjoys advising higher education clients on a broad range of legal matters because the work offers her the opportunity to be resourceful and innovative. “I give a lot of advice and counsel on the fly,” she says.

Natasha serves as legal counsel to administrators at both private and public institutions advising on matters including labor, employment, student affairs, and compliance issues. She counsels boards of trustees on the negotiation of presidential contracts and the termination of high level administrators. She also assists with the accreditation process, including appeals and revocation hearings.

“I have great relationships with lots of my clients; they know about my husband, family and dog. My clients are really smart, they want to do the right thing, and they’re thoughtful and reasonable.”

Natasha is passionate about legal issues in higher education and has co-authored amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court and the National Labor Relations Board in order to ensure that her clients’ perspective is fairly represented. Natasha regularly presents training sessions to administrators and faculty around the country on higher education issues including “Title IX Compliance,” “Conducting Effective Campus Investigations,” “Managing the Search Process,” “Conducting Effective Faculty Evaluations” and “Managing Within the Law.”

“I love being in front of people all day,” she says, noting that she averages one training session a week year-round.

Natasha’s practice includes conducting preventative training and providing practical advice on a wide range of legal issues, including Title IX compliance; performance management and termination strategies that minimize risk; and labor relations issues.

“I got into training because I was doing a lot of litigation, and it seemed like a huge waste of time,” she says. That time could be better spent on educating administrators and faculty on how to comply with a changing legal and regulatory landscape. “I like the proactive approach to it.”

Beyond her work with higher education institutions, Natasha represents corporate clients in administrative agency charges and state and federal litigation, and regularly conducts third-party investigations into a variety of workplace issues. She routinely trains supervisors and managers nationwide on the best practices for conducting investigations. She also drafts handbooks, policies and procedures to ensure that her clients are legally compliant and that best practices are followed.

Natasha enjoys working at Hirschfeld Kraemer because of its culture of specialization; she and her colleagues share a passion for individualized service. “We offer bespoke services in a niche market,” she says. “Our niche focus means we have a wealth of knowledge specific to our clients’ needs.”

“We do not have a ‘big law’ culture. There is more freedom and autonomy. We have a personality and a more flexible style – we have lives outside of work.”

Natasha and her husband spend a lot of their free time walking and running with their dog, Remy. She also skis, hikes and sails competitively.
