Jeffrey Orleans specializes in higher education law, with a special focus on athletics governance and administration; Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, generally and in athletics specifically; and other issues in diversity, discrimination and affirmative action.

His experience also includes:

  • Consultant to NCAA institutions and conferences in athletics strategic planning, leadership, administration, and gender equity, and for executive searches, beginning 2009
  • Executive Director, Council of Ivy Group Presidents/The Ivy League (National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I athletics conference), 1984-2009
  • Special Assistant to the President, University of North Carolina system, focusing on system desegregation plan, implementing Title IX and Section 504 of 1973 Rehabilitation Act, and faculty governance/due-process (co-author, U.S. Supreme Court amicus brief in Southeastern Community College), 1975-1984

  • Advise president, senior officers and athletic director at private selective liberal arts college for strategic management of NCAA Division III athletics program, including decision-making, budget and finance, Title IX, and integration with student affairs, beginning 2012
  • NCAA consultant, and annual Inclusion Forum speaker, beginning 2010, for Title IX and for “adaptive” athletics opportunities pursuant to Section 504
  • Consultant to Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics in seeking financial reform and renewed educational focus for intercollegiate athletics nationally, beginning 2009
