Natasha J. Baker


Natasha J. Baker is a partner in the firm's San Francisco office.  She advises private and public institutions of higher education on a broad range of legal matters, including labor, employment, student affairs and compliance issues.  Natasha counsels boards of trustees on the negotiation of presidential contracts and the termination of high level administrators.  She also assists with the accreditation process, including appeals and revocation hearings.  Natasha is passionate about legal issues in higher education and has co-authored amicus brief submissions to the United States Supreme Court and the National Labor Relations Board in order to ensure that her clients' perspective is represented.  Natasha regularly presents training sessions to administrators and faculty around the country on higher education issues including "Title IX Compliance," "Conducting Effective Campus Investigations," "Managing the Search Process," "Conducting Effective Faculty Evaluations," and "Managing Within the Law."  Her practice includes conducting preventative training and providing practical advice on a wide range of legal issues, including Title IX compliance; performance management and termination strategies that minimize risk; and labor relations issues.

Beyond her work with higher education institutions, Natasha represents corporate clients in administrative agency charges and state and federal litigation, and regularly conducts third-party investigations into a variety of workplace issues.  She routinely trains supervisors and managers nationwide on the best practices for conducting investigations.  She also drafts handbooks, policies and procedures to ensure that her clients are legally compliant and that best practices are followed.

Representative Matters

  • Conducted and supervised Title IX investigations;
  • Obtained dismissal of race discrimination lawsuit brought by a tenured faculty member dismissed for cause;
  • Advised on two faculty organizing campaigns;
  • Conducted investigation of high profile sexual harassment and workplace violence issue and served as witness on the same.

Professional and Civic Involvement

  • Co-founder of Title IX ASAP (Awareness and Sexual Assault Prevention) Training for Campus Administrators.
  • Board member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys ("NACUA") and CLE committee member;
  • Co-chair of the Higher Education Council of the Employment Law Alliance (composed of ELA member firms who specialize in higher education law);
  • Member of the Association of Workplace Investigators; and
  • Vanguard 15 Fleet Officer and St. Francis Yacht Club member.
